Sand Wash Basin 2018

by | Oct 16, 2018

Last year I had the privilege of visiting Sand Wash Basin near Maybell, Colorado. This year was quite different in that the drought played a heavy role in the horses habitat. For several months a local group, lead by Cindy Harms-Wright, has been providing water to the horses via troughs. Folks both far and wide have donated money and have done fundraising to provide this water. The food habitat has also been affected by this same drought. In September when we visited, animals had already started grazing on their winter forage. With people like Cindy, Aletha Dove, Nadja Rider, and so many more volunteers, these horses will have someone advocating for them to be a strong herd for years to come. The limited water has increased the horses interactions with each other. If you are interested in helping with the water efforts, click here.
